What is a Water Safety Instructor?

The Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Swim programs. Candidates focus on strategies to introduce and develop fitness activities, skills and water safety, and swimming skills in the Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids, Red Cross Swim @ School, Red Cross Swim @ Camp, Red Cross Swim for Adults & Teens, and Red Cross Swim Adapted programs.

Pre - Course Requirements

  • 15 years or older by the last day of the WSI course.
  • Ability to perform Red Cross Swim Kids 10 strokes and skills (Front Crawl, Breast Stroke, etc).
  • Hold a minimum qualification of Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard, Emergency First Aid or equivalent. (need not be current)
  • Access to a computer with an Internet connection to complete the Red Cross Online Learning Modules.
  • Both the Online and Teaching Experience components must be completed independently prior to entering our classroom.

Course Components

In order to be successful in the Water Safety Instructor course participants must attend, participate and complete 100% of all four course components below. The Teaching Experience the participant is required to complete a minimum in both Red Cross Preschool and Red Cross Swim Kids classes within six months of finishing the Online component.

  • WSI—Online – 14–20 hours.
  • WSI—Skills Evaluation* – 3–6 hours.
  • WSI—Teaching Experience – minimum 8 hours.
  • WSI—Classroom and Pool – 9 hours classroom, 12 hours pool.
This course is required for candidates to remain teaching children, teens and adults the techniques around swimming.
